The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The purpose of this internship is to provide students with hands-on experience in marketing and public relations for an art museum.  This internship will offer students the opportunity to do professional-level work under supervision in such areas as writing, website maintenance, media auditing, media relations, special events and executing marketing and advertising campaigns.

The internship program is based on the following criteria and standards:

  1. Interns are accepted for the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters of each school year.
  2. Two interns are accepted per semester.
  3. Applicants should be in their junior or senior year of college working as an intern for class credit.
  4. Applicants should be available to intern for a minimum of 10 hours per week, up to 20 hours per week as agreed upon prior to the internship beginning.
  5. This is an unpaid internship.
  6. All paperwork for the college must be handled by each intern.

Interested students should send in writing to the Intern Supervisor:

  • A resume including a list of Marketing, Public Relations and/or Communications courses taken
  • Full contact information including phone number, email and address
  • A cover letter expressing areas of interest and career goals
  • Submissions may be mailed, faxed or emailed
  • Materials should be received no later than July 25 for Fall semester internship, November 26 for Spring semester internship and April 10 for Summer semester internship

Interview Process:

  1. Applicants should contact the intern supervisor by the deadline of the semester they wish to conduct their internship.
  2. The intern supervisor will then phone the applicants to set up an interview.  All applicants will be required to complete an intern application.
  3. During the interview, the intern supervisor will learn about the applicants, their career goals and interests, work experience and discuss what The Cummer has to offer the applicants in work experience in the Marketing and Public Relations field.
  4. Before the semester begins, the intern supervisor will notify the applicants selected to be interns for the Marketing and Public Relations Department.
  5. The intern supervisor will notify the applicants chosen of the intern orientation that is held the first week of classes.  This orientation is mandatory.

Qualifications:

  1. Pursuing a degree and career in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field.
  2. Ability to communicate (written and verbal) in a professional manner when dealing with employees, vendors, media and company contacts.
  3. Excellent computer skills, preferably Microsoft Office.
  4. Ability to meet deadlines.
  5. Detail oriented and strong organizational and planning skills.
  6. Must be a team member and willing to learn.

Internship Responsibilities:

  1. Write and distribute media releases and media advisories to all media.
  2. Research ideas and write blogs for The Cummer blog.
  3. Assist with writing articles for the Museum’s monthly eNewsletter.
  4. Assist with media auditing.
  5. Maintain and update database of media contacts.
  6. Organize media clippings and marketing and promotional materials for each Museum exhibition.
  7. Create and organize media kits for all Museum exhibitions and programs.
  8. Ensure that all museum events and exhibitions are current in tourist giveaway magazines, newspapers and web sites.
  9. Assist with media relations, community relations and internal communications.
  10. Assist with executing marketing and advertising campaigns.
  11. Attend and assist with Museum special events.
  12. Assist with special projects as needed.
